Tijdens de ceremonie stond Maren Morris bovenaan de lijst van finalisten met maar liefs zes nominaties, Brothers Osborne ontving vier nominaties, en Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Luke Combs, Dan + Shay, Kacey Musgraves, Blake Shelton, Chris Stapleton en Carrie Underwood scoorden drie nominaties elk. Elk jaar worden de genomineerden en winnaars van de CMA Awards bepaald door de meer dan 7.400 professionele leden van de Country Music Association, die na oprichting in 1958 de eerste handelsorganisatie is die werd opgericht om een individueel muziekgenre te promoten. De eerste CMA Awards Banquet and Show werd gehouden in 1967. Het jaar daarop werden de CMA Awards voor het eerst op NBC Television uitgezonden - waarmee het het langst lopende, jaarlijkse muziekonderscheidingsprogramma op televisie is. De show werd in 2006 op het ABC Television Network uitgezonden, waar het vandaag nog steeds wordt uitgezonden. In de jaren '90 was de show ook op de Nederlandse televie te zien.
